Lucky 13 Blog Hop

Today is indeed a very lucky day for me. Twenty-three years ago, I married the man of my dreams. Yet, many have told me it was crazy to choose the 13th of October for my wedding. Why? It's always been a lucky number for me. Which made me think about superstitions and their origins.

What would a Lucky 13 Blog Hop be without some superstitions? Shall we explore them?

Knock on wood:
Knock, knock. Who’s there? Ever wonder why people knock on wood to prevent being jinxed? Well, the Pagans believed that all living materials were imbued with spiritual powers, including trees. By knocking on the wood, a person could drive away the evil spirits from the object in which they resided. Think about that next time you knock on someone’s door.

Breaking mirrors:
Souls were said to dwell in mirrors, and in the ancient world, if you looked into one you could invite death. Also that any harm done to the mirror, would be reflected back on the person who broke it. As time went by, the punishment lessoned to 7 years for cracking that looking-glass.

The Victorians covered their mirrors in black cloth while a body was laid out in the house. This was thought to keep the spirit from becoming trapped in the glass, instead of moving on to the afterlife. Going hand and hand with that, if you saw your reflection in a mirror in a room where someone just died, you would die soon also. Many cultures believe cameras can capture soul, like a mirror.  So, if the Victorians were so superstitious, I wonder why they took portraits of their dead loved ones. Anyone?
Mirror, mirror on the wall....

Black cats:
I had a black cat for 16 years and he, like the lucky 13, brought me nothing but luck. So, where did they get their bad reputations? In the Western culture, black cats are considered bad luck. In fact, people still hold to this superstition today. Go to any humane society and ask. The black cats are the last to be adopted. But where did this madness come from? In some cultures, black cats are considered good luck. Look at the early pagans. They believed them to be so.

And since early Christians believed pagans to be witches, it didn’t take long for them to link a black cat to a witch, someone in league with the devil.
Pleaseeeeeeee.
Besides the black cat, some other black animals are known for being bad omens. I mean you can have a flock of geese, but when you have a group of ravens, they are called a murder. Nevermore!

Black hounds:
From folklore of the British Isles, the black hound is thought to be a hellhound, or portent of death. Black dogs are universally regarded as malevolent, some are even accused of being harmful, or causing death. A few of the more notorious: The Gurt Dog of Somerset, The Black Hound of Hanging Hills Connecticut and The Barghest.

Black Horses:
PĂșca—or ghost horse from Irish folklore can either bring good or bad luck. Tales say that if he appears to you in the form of a black colt, with chains hanging from him and you climb on his back, you’ll never be seen again.

However, if you are a farmer and you offer him a gift, he will return it tenfold, blessing you with wealth. Maybe. Are you ready to make a deal with the Devil?
Most say beware the devil beasts that bear a black coat.

Wonder what my cat would have thought of that?
Walking under a ladder brings bad luck.

Where did this superstition come from? There are a couple of theories. One is that in medieval times, the ladders were used to get criminals to the gallows, in fact, in areas where trees were scarce; some criminals were hung from the top rung of a ladder that had been leaned against a wall. The evil spirit was thought to reside there. So when you walked under the ladder, you took a chance you’d encounter that spirit.
The other theory is that early Christians believed the triangle a sacred symbol of the Trinity. By walking under a ladder, you were breaking the triangle and this meant you were in league with the devil.
Trick or treat?

This phrase owes its origins to souling and guising. Beggars would often beg for cakes in return for offering prayers for the dead on All Souls Day.

You ready for your trick?

Let’s talk alien abduction. In Last Flight of the Ark, Col Kaleb Titan and his crew discover aliens have been taking people from Earth for thousands of years. But why? In this tale from a darker side of the galaxy, Kaleb and his crew are placed in a situation where they must make a choice that won't be easy.

 Blurb:

Evolution never happened so fast.

Twelve hours outside of Terra II, Colonel Kaleb Titan, a molecular geneticist and commander of the Ark faces a life or death choice that could change the fate of mankind.

The Genesis I, aka the Ark, travels with a hold full of wildlife and three crew members. When a wolf bite and genetically-altering gamma radiation transform Kaleb, he notices his senses have been heightened, his libido has gone haywire and he can’t keep his hands off his crew. Worse yet, they don't seem inclined to stop him.

When their sister ship, the Genesis II arrives early, Kaleb’s problems compound. As soon as the command crew of the Genesis II boards, one whiff tells Kaleb they’re not from Earth or who they appear to be.

When he discovers that they’ve kept the Genesis II’s crew of over two thousand alive, he begins to believe their reasons may be far more ominous than anyone could have imagined. However, he also discovers what’s holding them back. The hijackers seem to be allergic to canines.

Now they're forced to employ biological warfare against their own, but will it be enough to save humanity?

History is about to repeat and only one species will survive.

I’m giving away an e-copy of Last Flight of the Ark to one lucky commenter. All you have to do is leave your email and a short thought or two about superstitions and their origins. That’s it. At the end of the hop, I’ll draw a name from my virtual hat.

You know I like SUPERMAN, right? Check this out!

Hello! If you haven't already guessed by now, Superman is my favorite Superhero. And this year, he's celebrating 75 years. Looks pretty good for his age, if you ask me. ;)

Anyway, I was reading an article on Space.com about how Superman's origins may have been born from a star explosion. And that article linked to this really cool infographic on Newsarama.com:

Book Spotlight: The Descartes Legacy by Nina Croft. Enter to WIN a $25 gift card! #scifirom #SyFy #giveaway

The Descartes Legacy

by Nina Croft

Lucas Grafton has spent the last ten years hunting the Conclave, a secret organization who took everything from him: his wife, his child, his very identity. Now he has a lead—an imminent terrorist attack on London—code-named Descartes.

Born with a genetic illness, Jenna Young has always known she was different. But the unexpected death of her father catapults her into a world of murder and terrorism she never expected. In order to stay alive, she must solve a twenty-five year old mystery—and her only ally a hard bitter man in search or retribution, her only clue the Descartes Highlands, an area on the near side of the moon.

Luke’s need for revenge collides with Jenna’s hunt for the past, and together they must stand against the Conclave. All the while uncovering the truth behind Jenna’s illness, a truth that will make Jenna question her very humanity.

Excerpt:

When she pulled herself up, the room whirled around her. Somehow she managed to follow Luke out of the kitchen and down the hallway. Pushing open a door, he gestured to her to enter. “Try to sleep, and we’ll talk in the morning.”

Jenna swayed as she passed him. Putting her hand out for balance, she encountered the hard heat of his chest. Swearing softly, he closed his eyes for a second. Then he picked her up, carried her into the bedroom, and placed her gently down on the bed.

“Come on, Jenna, just a few more minutes and you can sleep.”

“I’m fine, really I am. Just everything keeps spinning.”

He straightened. Was he leaving? She didn’t want to be alone, and she had to swallow the urge to ask him to stay. Instead, he disappeared through another door and came back seconds later carrying a black toweling robe and a washcloth. He crouched in front of her, and gently wiped her face with the damp cloth.

Jenna closed her eyes and gave herself up to his touch. She was floating, suspended in time, only aware of his closeness, his hands gentle as he stripped her clothes. Her body responded to his touch, a heavy warmth building inside her.

When she was naked, he wrapped the robe around her shoulders. “Sleep.”

Exhaustion rolled over her and she lay down on top of the blanket. She would rest a little while then get up and shower. Curling herself into a ball, her injured hand held against her chest, she was vaguely aware of Luke moving around the room, picking up her clothes. His presence reassured her, and she closed her eyes.

But behind her lids, she saw the blond man who had snapped her finger. He came toward her, his eyes mocking, and the same sense of helplessness washed over her.

That had been the worst thing, even worse than the pain. The feeling she had been powerless, that they could do what they liked to her, and she could do nothing to stop them.

Tears rolled down her cheek, soaking the pillow, but she couldn’t seem to stop. The mattress depressed as Luke sat down beside her. He didn’t speak, just leaned back against the wall and pulled her into his arms. He smelled of warm man, clean sweat spiked with some exotic after-shave. Sighing, she burrowed her face against his chest, and finally drifted into sleep to the throb of his heart.

Giveaway!!

At the end of The Descartes Legacy tour, Nina will give away $25 Gift Card.

Future Technology from The Underground series. Fiction is becoming reality. #SyFy #scifirom

Hello and thank you for joining me today! Last week, I talked about some of the music that inspired The Underground futuristic dystopian series. And today, I'm going to share some of the futuristic technology that is mentioned in the series.

Most of the technology that I used in the stories is based on my years of watching Star Trek, and also some Stargate SG-1.

One of the first things I mention is the portal, a doorway that connects to distant locations separated by spacetime. In the case of The Underground, the portal takes people from Earth to the distant planet, Airondelle, where Planet Core is trying to establish a colony. But these portals do not exist. There are no shortcuts through space or time. Or is there? Last year, NASA discovered that there are hidden portals in Earth's Magnetic Field. Not exactly the same as those in my story and in the Stargate shows, but it could open the doors to that technology.

The med-inject mentioned in Never Gonna Let You Go is very much like the new Insulin Injection units. There is no exposed needle. The unit is simply placed on the arm, and when pressed down, the medicine is injected into the body.

And then there's the laser gun, mentioned and used in Never Gonna Say Goodbye. While the rebels are armed with the firearms common with our ancestors, Planet Core's forces have laser guns. The rebels stand no chance. While there are no true laster weapons available to consumers, this article talks about some of the military lasers in development.

So, while science fiction authors mention all sorts of technology that has yet to be common place, there are scientists out there who are working on developing them. Like those who are trying to build The Enterprise.

What technology from science fiction would you like to see become reality??

Oh, and don't forget to grab Never Gonna Let You Go for only 99 Cents from Amazon or All Romance! Today is the LAST DAY to get it for this price!

Music from The Underground #dystopian #playlist

Hello everyone! It's cooling down here, with a few days of frost already, but I'm okay with that. I do love fall. :)

Two days ago, the last book of The Underground series, NEVER GONNA SAY GOODBYE, released from Decadent Publishing. Will the rebels defeat Planet Core once and for all, or die trying?

Available From:
Decadent Publishing | Amazon.com | All Romance | B&N | more

Plus, you can get the first book in the series, NEVER GONNA LET YOU GO, for only 99 CENTS from Amazon and All Romance.

When writing this series, listening to the right music was key. I had to feel the angst of the rebels, their longing for freedom, and the love they had for each other. Love that led them to sacrifice so much, including their lives.

Here are some of the key songs for this series:

So, what music would you recommend for a dystopian world? I'm always looking for suggestions. :)

Friend, Lovers and Enemies - Guest post by @ChandraRyan #SFR #polyamory

Friends, Lovers and Enemies.

Guest post by Chandra Ryan

It’s been said that hate isn’t the opposite of love. Hate has too much passion, too much heat to be. If you’re looking for the opposite of love, you have to turn toward apathy. But when you’re in the middle of a good old-fashioned feud, love might just be the furthest thing on your mind.

Then again, if there’s a history, if it was love that drove you to hate, love might not be as far away as one might hope. And that’s the spot one of my heroes, Ben, finds himself in with my newest book, Shared Objectives.

Ben and Lisa had been in a relationship two years ago. One that ended when he found out she is a geneticist working for the government. Being a genetically altered soldier who is fighting for a rebel organization, she is clearly Ben’s enemy. Which, in his mind, meant she’d been using him.

And when they’re forced to reunite two years later, he’s still carrying that hatred. But he’s going to need more than anger to keep their old chemistry from affecting him, especially when one of his friends, Dixie, starts having feelings for Lisa. He’ll have to find a way to make peace with the past or he stands to lose more than just his lover this time.

Blurb:

Universal Defiance, Book Two

When Lisa and her son are rescued from a military prison, one look at the genetically altered mercenary who carries her to freedom puts some racy ideas into her head. Dixie is strong, handsome and kind, an unfamiliar combination. Her job as a government geneticist usually sends men running, not rushing to her aid.

Unfortunately Dixie isn’t alone. Lisa’s ex, Ben, is another member of the Coalition, the band of rebels fighting against the government that locked up Lisa. After their split two years ago, she never thought she’d have to face his scorn again. But now she has to work with him without giving in to old temptations. Or so she thinks.

The men need her for her genetics skills. When they discover they’re both attracted to her, they have to find a way to share or risk destroying their friendship. And Lisa finds that two sets of sexy hands all over her body are hotter than one.

Inside Scoop: This mĂ©nage features a kiss between two men that sparks a plan to steal a woman’s heart.

A Romantica® futuristic erotic romance from Ellora’s Cave

Excerpt:

The man sitting at the computer terminals turned to face her for the first time and Lisa’s blood went cold. At least now she knew who had her. She’d been taken by the Coalition. She’d never be able to forget his face or who he worked for.

Her grip on Nate tightened as she fought back a wave of fear. This was the one man who had a claim on Nate. He could take her baby from her and she couldn’t do anything to stop him. Laws didn’t apply to those who fought to bring down the lawmakers. “Hello, Ben.” Her voice was soft as she said his name. “Long time no see.”

Ben smirked at her. “So you managed to get knocked up by one of us, then?”

His voice held condescension even over the static of the microphone. But his arrogance actually helped her relax. If he didn’t know Nate belonged to him, he wouldn’t fight her for their child. “What can I say? Looks as though I was just a whore for the government after all.” She managed to glare at him as she repeated the final words he’d yelled at her the last time they’d been together. Two years was a long time, but it felt as if mere seconds had passed as she stared at him.

He just shrugged and then reached into one of his cargo pant pockets to pull out a sealed syringe package. “I tried to warn you about their retirement plan.” He passed her the medicine and then returned to his station.

“Thank you.” The words had to be forced through gritted teeth but she still managed to get them out.

“I’m not doing it for you.”

His words hurt almost as much as watching her son waste away in her arms. She’d loved him once. And she’d been naĂŻve enough to believe the words he’d whispered against her skin. Once he’d found out who she worked for, though, his words hadn’t been nearly so nice or inviting. “Yeah, you made your feelings about me clear the last time we spoke.” She used the excuse of taking the injection out of the package to not have to look at him. Thankfully, as she injected the chemical into her baby, she could almost see his health improve. “I’m trying to be gracious for the sake of my son.”

“No need. He’s one of us and we take care of our own.”

Some handy tips to get past the gatekeeper.

If you are an author new to a publishing company, or maybe someone who hasn’t published a manuscript before, I’d like to talk a moment about the do’s and don’ts of submitting manuscripts.

As an acquisitions editor for a publishing company, I see a lot of mistakes that result in the rejection of stories. Many of these rejections could have been avoided. Let’s talk about some of the more frequent reasons a manuscript might be rejected.

The first thing you want to do before you even submit, is make sure you get a second set of eyes on your manuscript, not family or non-writing friends, but a fellow author, preferably someone who writes in your genre. Even a seasoned author can miss things. Rinse and repeat. I need a beta reader. This is not an option if you want to be taken seriously.

If you don’t have one, I can direct you to a great critique group online that’s free. www.critiquecircle.com. Many authors have launched their careers from this site, developed friendships and found peers to help them along in their publishing journey. It’s important you hone your craft. Editors are not there to clean up messy manuscripts. They are there to tweak minor flaws and plot holes. We are not the author. We do not rewrite your books. Your story should be scrubbed clean and as flawless as you can make it before you even think of hitting send.

Now that your manuscript is clean, let’s talk about some of the things that will get you an automatic no.

·         Your query letter. Please don’t tell me what other publishers you’ve been rejected by and why. Don’t tell me how many cats you have, or children, or that you are into this craft or that. Unless it has to do with your writing experience, I really don’t care. Your query is a sales pitch. You want to keep it positive and yes, professional. Please make sure it is free of grammatical errors and you address it properly. A submission to Mr.  when the editor is a Ms., won’t sit well. If there is no specific person to address it to, dear editor is fine. Many editors reject at this introduction if you don’t go out of your way to make it the best it can be. So make sure you knock our socks off and we know why we must have your story.

·         Know what the publisher publishes. This is a big one. You don’t submit children’s picture books to an erotic romance publisher. Go to the publisher’s site and research  the kind of books they represent. Still not sure? Read their guidelines. It will clarify things. Still not sure—contact us. It is better to ask, than to assume.

·         Which brings me to the next issue. Read their guidelines. If we ask for the first two chapters and a synopsis, give us the first two chapters and a synopsis. Not chapters five and six, or the whole thing. Or if we ask that you submit a special form and provide directions on where to get it, please take the time and fill it out. We have it for a reason and by not sending it, you are telling us you don’t take this process seriously. Why should we take you seriously?

·         Formatting. Every publisher has different requirements. If we state we want double spaced Times New Roman and at 12pt, this does not mean single space cursive in red at 16pt. You’re a writer. If you don’t know what I'm talking about, you better get a book and brush up on Word.

·         Simultaneous submissions. If a publisher says they don’t take them, please respect their request and either wait until you hear back from the other publisher, or hold off submitting to anyone else until you hear back from us. Most publishers have fairly quick turn around, but if it exceeds the time we stated we needed to review, feel free to contact us and ask. We may not have received it. Nothing makes an editor as angry as spending time to read a submission, only to find out the author published it elsewhere after we told you up front we didn’t take simultaneous submissions. The publishing world is a small place. Don’t burn bridges.

·         No-nos. All publishers list what they don’t want to see. Ever. Slipping something we don’t accept into the middle of the story because you think we’re going to miss the incest or bestiality, won’t just get you rejected, you’ll probably end up on a do not publish list.

Now that I covered what will get you a rejection, I want to talk for a moment about submission etiquette. If you receive a rejection letter stating your story is not the right fit for our company, please do not email back and ask why. We are busy, receiving hundreds of submissions a year and do not have the time to critique every manuscript that comes into our inbox. It should have been critiqued before you sent it. If we say it wasn’t a right fit—it wasn’t a right fit—move on.

If however you are lucky enough to get a revise and resubmit, the editor will tell you what needs to be fixed if you would like to be considered for publication with our house. This does not mean you have a yes, you have a maybe. Fix it and resubmit.

Acceptance. Do a happy dance. We’ll be sending you a contract soon.

I hope this was helpful. Just remember, every author goes through this process. We do our time and eventually our craft is honed enough to start seeing acceptance letters. Rejections are part of becoming an author. Take them for what they are and keep trying.

Best,

D. L. Jackson

What would you do if you had an Alien Admirer? #scifirom #SyFy

Hello everyone! After two days of the hottest weather this summer and a rockin' thunderstorm, the temperature has returned to normal, and is supposed to get even cooler this week. Yay!

Earlier this month, I sent the second story in my Alien Next Door series to my editors, so I thought I'd give you a sneak peek at the cover and an excerpt from the story. Enjoy!

He fills her with forbidden longing…

Widowed for over a year, Sera longs for the company of her younger, sexier neighbor, the one man she can never have—unless she plans to rob the cradle. It’s too dangerous…

She’s the only one for him…

Adam never wanted to settle down…until Sera. But even when her children give him the green light, he must prove age is an alien concept...

Will Sera give him a chance, or will Adam be left in the cold, never more than her alien admirer?

Unedited excerpt:

Stretching out her fingers and toes, she stood at the end of the dock and when the warm breeze gently nudged her forward, she jumped.

Sera tensed when she plunged in, her body breaking out in goose bumps. Instead of gliding through the water as she’d planned, she pushed off the silt-covered bottom and broke the surface, gasping for air. “Holy shit, that’s cold.”

She wiped the droplets from her face and fumbled to get back to the dock. Why the hell did I think that was a good idea? Sure, she temporarily forgot all of her grief, but at the expense of her body temperature and pride. Thank goodness no one else saw.

Placing her hands on the first plank, she hopped back up on the dock. She rubbed her arms, hoping the warm air would dry her off fast. Next time she would dip her foot in before plunging in. Her teeth chattered so hard, making her jaw ache. She gathered up her clothes then raced for her house, craving a warm blanket. A warm body.

“Need a towel?”

Sera shrieked, jerking to a halt. Oh, shit. Everyone was supposed to be sleeping. She squeezed her eyes shut, hoping she’d imagined the voice. When she opened them again, she glanced to her left.

Adam. Great! The last person she wanted to see before bed. While naked. She held her clothes across her breasts and groin to cover them from his sight. How much had he already seen? God, why can’t this be a dream? Yet, a fantasy about the man next door wouldn’t leave her shivering. Just sweaty.

“Adam, what are you doing out here? I thought I was alone.” She would never make that assumption again.

He stared at her, his blue eyes sparkling in the diminishing light, filling her with sudden warmth.

“I came to offer you a towel. To dry off. I noticed you didn’t have one when you jumped in.”

He’d seen her the entire time? Watched her fumbling in the lake? She stepped back, needing distance. He was never supposed to see her naked.

**Plus, don't forget that Never Gonna Say Goodbye releases on Tuesday! Plus, there will be a sale on the first book in The Underground series, Never Gonna Let You Go. Stay tuned to my blog for more information.

What's up with the planet Mars?

Good day! September is finally here. :) One of my kids is back to school, and the other will be soon, which means more time to write. Yay!

Anyway, I've been seeing a lot of things posted across the web lately about our closest neighboring planet, Mars.

What's going on? Well, have you heard of MARS ONE? It is a not-for-profit organization that plans to establish a human settlement on Mars in the year 2023. And new crew will arrive every two years, leading to the growth of the colony. Cool, eh? What was once fiction is becoming our reality. The only catch is, once you leave Earth, you will not be coming back. Here's more information.

Plus, NASA is looking at the idea of HIBERNATION for those traveling to Mars in the future. Not exactly cryogenics, but a first step. Here's an article on Space.com.

And while we on Earth are trying to get to Mars, there is a new study that suggests life on Earth may have originated on the Red Planet. Learn more at Space.com.

So, are we voyaging to a new planet, or simply returning home?

I find all of this not only fascinating, but inspiration for so many stories. How about you?

It's poll time! Help Jessica E. Subject with her next cover. #scifi #urbanscifi

Hello peeps! Thank you for joining me today! Right now, the second story in my Alien Next Door series, Alien Admirer, is with my CPs, and I'm finishing up another 1Night Stand story, His Alien Virgin. After those, my next project is going to be an urban sci-fi. While there will be some romantic elements, the romance will not be the main focus of the story. It will be more aliens in an action/adventure. So, I have a question for you.

What would you prefer to see on the cover of an urban sci-fi with romantic elements?

(Yes, I know many of these are urban fantasy and PNR, but I'm just trying to show representatives of the options. :)

A) A couple embracing?

B) A couple, but not embracing?

C) Only one character in an urban setting?

D) Close up of one character?

E) All of the characters in the story?

F) A symbol representing the story?

G) Other - please share what you'd like to see.

I look forward to your answers. :)

Coming Soon

Clone is coming soon. That's right. After five long years of work, it's ready for publication. This novel, in my opinion, was the hardest, most emotional novel I've written. I hope you'll join me in November, when I release Clone--The Book of Eva, Book I in the Clone Trilogy, and enter a world of forbidden love, deception and enemies who are cloaked as friends.

In the year 2087, a great war erupts on the planet and a struggle to survive begins. One hundred-fifty years later, the continent of America is divided into two factions, Aeropia and The United Regions. There is a shortage of food and an abundance of illness, leaving most to live on the scraps of the wealthy, who wallow in excess.

This is the world Olivia Braun inherits. Sick from birth, she wakes up from surgery with a new heart, only to discover she is the youngest president of Aeropia, an empire that has created and used clones to maintain their position of supremacy since the war. However, Olivia’s rise to power is no accident. Before her transplant, she conspired with a clone to free those enslaved, but the outcome is not what she expects.

Now, enemies hide among the population, and even friends can no longer be trusted. Olivia must make a choice that will decide the fate of an empire. Before her tale of corruption, forbidden love and war ends, the mighty will be brought to their knees.

By a clone.

What About The Cats? Guest Post by @MariaHammarblad #scifirom #OperationEarth

WHAT ABOUT THE CATS?

Guest Post by Maria Hammarblad

Cats? What in the galaxy is this woman babbling about? Cats?

They’re relevant to my book. Honest!

In the first draft of Operation Earth the book had one cat: the heroine’s. This feline is named BonBon after my dog Bonnie, and she plays a big part in Rachael’s life.

Sometimes people ask why so many of my characters have cats; I’m more known for being a dog person. It just turns out that way. I like cats, I just don’t have one living with me right now. My heroines are often cat people, or end up in a setting where a cat seems… right.

Anyway, BonBon has an important part in the story. Rachael wants to be a good kitty mom, she talks to the cat, and worries for the cat. When the alien Peter first comes into their lives, BonBon hides from him. It goes like this:

The cat trotted out of the bedroom, stared at him, and froze. A moment later it fled across the room, seeking shelter under the sofa.

“Bonbon?”

Peter sighed.

“She knows I’m not of this world. Animals never like us.”

“Really? They know?”

Maybe the intruders were different on a level so deep only an animal’s senses could detect it. Her first instinct was to try to soothe the cat, but if he was right, nothing she did or said would help.

Later in the story Peter gains the cat’s trust. This is an unprecedented event, but it had to happen. I don’t think Rachael would ever have trusted him if Bonbon remained under the sofa, hissing at his feet. I sure don’t trust people my dogs don’t like; they’re much better judges of character than I am.

My editor is a big cat lover and cat rescuer, and she helped me tweak the details to make the cat more believable. She also suggested that if one cat could take to one alien, maybe the same thing happened in more places. Since the aliens have always been shunned by animals, maybe they in turn were fascinated with the kitties, and brought some to the mother ship. Given a little time, they’ll probably take over.

Reviewers and blog hosts who read the book have asked, “Why cats? Wouldn’t other animals be easier to
get along with?” Now you know. =)

Operation Earth by Maria Hammarblad

Seven billion people on Earth go about their daily lives, and no one is prepared when a global EMP slows the world to a crawl. With all our technology incapacitated, everything changes. Within days alien soldiers line the streets, and life will never be the same. In the midst of chaos, Rachael Hill struggles to adapt to the new order, doing her best to keep herself and her cat alive.

On a ship far above the planet surface, Peter just got his new Earth name, and can’t even remember his identity from the last world he visited. It’s another day on the job, one more planet on a never-ending list. That is, until Rachael bumps into him, dropping exotic objects all around his feet. His culture taught him females should be obeyed and protected, but he never had an urge to leave himself at a woman’s mercy until now.

Rachael’s neighbor Ryan hounds her to join a brewing resistance movement and make a stand against the newcomers. She still befriends Peter, enthralled by his enigmatic personality and hypnotic golden eyes. Would falling in love with an alien be treason against humanity? When the rebellion gains momentum and open conflict with the newcomers is a fact, Rachael’s personal insurrection might be her doom, or bring salvation to us all.

About Maria Hammarblad:

Born in Sweden in the early 1970's, Maria showed a large interest for books at an early age. Even before she was able to read or write, she made her mom staple papers together into booklets she filled with drawings of suns and planets. She proudly declared them, "The Sun Book." They were all about the sun. She also claimed, to her mother's horror, that her being on Earth was a big mistake and that her alien family would come and bring her home at any moment. This never happened, but both the interest in space and the passion for bookmaking stayed with her.

As an adult Maria's creativity got an outlet through playing bass in a number of rock bands, and through writing technical manuals and making web pages for various companies and organizations. She did write drafts for a few novels, but the storytelling muse was mostly satisfied through role playing online on Myspace. It was here, while writing stories together with people from around the globe, she stumbled onto Mike. They started talking out of character, and she moved over to Florida to him late 2008. Today the two are married and live in the Tampa Bay area with three rescue dogs.

Besides writing and playing bass, Maria enjoys driving off-road, archery, and Tameshigiri.

A New Release from Melisse Aires & a Giveaway!!

Please welcome Melisse Aires to Backward Momentum to tell us about her new release, Starwoman's Sanctuary!

About the book~

I wrote Starwoman's Sanctuary thinking of all the work charity institutions have done through the years to help people in need. I have a friend who works with the local food banks and admire her dedication--it is more than a job.

I went to Catholic school as did my mother and I have good memories of nuns who taught, who loved me and my family. My mother, a child in the Depression with eleven siblings, remembers the sisters giving them Nickles so they could go to the movies and remembered a Christmas when they came home from church to find bags of food and treats on the porch, highlights of her childhood.

Another influence--the old movie Father Goose. If you've never seen it you should!

So I wanted to write a character who made choices in her life to help the helpless. We meet Skyleen as she is ready to 'retire', she has established a healthy Sanctuary.
