Interview with Cynthia Woolf, author of The Swords of Gregara-Honora

Hello, Cynthia! Welcome to Backward Momentum! It’s always wonderful to have a fellow science fiction romance author visit. Can you tell us about your latest release?

CW: My latest release is The Swords of Gregara – Honora.  Here is the blurb for the book:

They stole her love, her life and want to steal the secrets secured in her mind. Secrets that could topple world governments and decimate quadrant security forever.  Now she’s on an epic quest to find out why and make those responsible pay.

Honora Reyestat gave up everything to become a member of the esteemed Gregarian Guard.  No family, no friends, no connections--nothing that can ever be used against her.  Captured and enslaved, she's become a prized gladiator for her master.  Given the task of training a new slave, she recognizes a fellow Zolthor and the son of a tribal leader at that.  Her mission changes from discovery of the enemy's tactics and secrets to returning Joridan to his people.

Drawn to this fierce woman as no other, Joridan Dolana tries to explain she is wrong.  He's not Zolthor, he's Centauri.  He was raised on Centauri with his sister.  Faced with proof of a father's ultimate betrayal, he must choose between revenge and the protection of this woman who has sworn to never return his love.

Describe the main character in three words.

CW: Driven, secretive, alone

What makes the setting for this story unique?

CW: It takes place on two different planets, Gregara and Thrakus.

What was your inspiration for this story?

CW: I was watching Spartacus and wondered what if Spartacus was a woman and then what if she was also a spy.

Who is your favorite character from this book? Can you include an excerpt involving this character?

CW: My favorite character is Honora. Here is a small excerpt:

“Oww” a woman’s voice awash with pain reached his ears.

“You disappoint me, Honora.  You continue to try to escape me.  When will you learn?” asked a whiney voiced man.

The whip struck flesh.  Again the woman moaned but didn’t scream.  She didn’t scream.

When he woke again he was not alone but the man with the whip was gone.  Chained across the room from him, hung by her wrists, was a woman.  He could see the lash marks on her back.  Lash upon lash, new over old.  They obstructed the beautiful tattoo of a dragon on her back.  The blood hard to see within the red of the dragon.

Crawling to her he released her hands from the chains holding her up.  She collapsed in a heap on the floor.  He crawled back to his side of the room as darkness overtook him once more.

*****

The dried blood on her back cracked with each movement, but she worked through the pain as she stretched.  Breathed deep and accepted the pain.  Her sword weighed heavier in her hand than usual.  More evidence of the lashing two nights ago.  She looked down at the unconscious man at her feet.  A new recruit.  A Zolthor,  like herself.  Another reason Perdor punished her for her attempted escape, her sixth try in as many months.

This last punishment was the worst.  Five lashes.  Not enough to incapacitate her but enough to make her remember.  Perdor wanted her to be able to train the new slave.  He wanted them to be a team, good enough to take on all contenders.  He’d be the only owner with two Zolthor fighting for him.  Not just one, but a team.  He was practically wetting himself in anticipation of the beras that he’ll win with a team of Zolthor fighters.

Again she looked down on the naked man.  Long brown lashes lay against his cheek.  A nice contrast to his golden blond hair.  What color eyes did they hide?  Blue?  Green?  Brown perhaps.  She’d find out soon enough.

He was a beautiful man.  Well formed.  Broad shoulders.  Trim waist.  Long muscular legs.  He looked like a warrior.  Would be a good fighter.  Maybe even a good lover as he appeared well endowed there as well.

He’d awakened from the drug induced sleep long enough to crawl over and release her from the chains.  For that she was grateful.  Her wrists didn’t hurt as much as usual because of him.  Using her blade was easier than it had been after her previous punishments.

Time to wake up the sleeping man and get him trained.  Time was short and she intended to make the most of it.  He would learn or he would die.

How long have you been writing with the hopes of publication?

CW: I started writing seriously in 1990.  That was the first time I joined RWA.  I had to let my membership lapse for a while and rejoined in 2001.

Why does science fiction romance appeal to you? Do you write in any other genres?

CW: I like science fiction romance because I can create my world any way I want it to be.  I’m only limited by my imagination.  And romance because I love romance fiction.  I also write historical western romance.  As a matter of fact, I call what I write ‘westerns in space’.

Can you describe your daily writing routine?

CW: I don’t have a “routine”.  I have terrible insomnia and because of that I can be working at all hours of the day and night.  I usually spend most of my time on promo with Twitter and Facebook.  Then I do email and last I write.  In reality I’m always writing, in my head, I just don’t get to put it down on paper as often as I would like.

What genres do you enjoy reading?

CW: I enjoy reading historical romance.  Although I’m trying to get out of my comfort zone and try some erotica and some contemporary romance.

What is your favorite SFR title that you’ve read?

CW: My favorite is Star King by Susan Grant.  It was one of the books I read before I decided to put my dream that I had when I was 15 down on paper.  Thus Centauri Dawn was born.

Where can my readers find you?

CW: You can find me at my website, www.cynthiawoolf.com

Where can my readers find your books?

CW: My books are on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Smashwords, Apple & Sony.  Basically anywhere you can find ebooks, you’ll find my books.

Author Bio:

Cynthia Woolf was born in Denver, Colorado and raised in the mountains west of Golden. She spent her early years running wild around the mountain side with her friends.

Their closest neighbor was one quarter of a mile away, so her little brother was her playmate and her best friend. That fierce friendship lasted until his death in 2006.
Cynthia was and is an avid reader. Her mother was a librarian and brought new books home each week. This is where young Cynthia first got the storytelling bug. She wrote her first story at the age of ten. A romance about a little boy she liked at the time.

She worked her way through college and went to work full time straight after graduation and there was little time to write. Then in 1990 she and two friends started a round robin writing a story about pirates. She found that she missed the writing and kept on with other stories. In 1992 she joined Colorado Romance Writers and Romance Writers of America. Unfortunately, the loss of her job demanded she not renew her memberships and her writing stagnated for many years.

In 2001, she saw an ad in the paper for a writers conference being put on by CRW and decided she'd attend. One of her favorite authors, Catherine Coulter, was the keynote speaker. Cynthia was lucky enough to have a seat at Ms. Coulter's table at the luncheon and after talking with her, decided she needed to get back to her writing. She rejoined both CRW and RWA that day and hasn't looked back.
Cynthia credits her wonderfully supportive husband Jim and the great friends she's made at CRW for saving her sanity and allowing her to explore her creativity.

The Sci Fi Romance Brigade Presents--Clone

SFR Brigade Presents--click here to check out the other posts.

Today I present a snippit from my work in progress, Clone, where Olivia wakes up with a new heart.

My heart thumped against my ribs. I rested my hand over my breast bone, to steady the beat. Stronger than it had ever been. No! I eyed the door where a digital board hung. My medical history—everything I’d been through. I flailed in my bed, ripping the monitors off, kicking the sheets and blankets to a tangle at my feet. Rolling off the side, I fell to the floor, the blankets still wrapped around my legs, sharp pains shot up my tailbone. Fire in my chest. I cried out and clutched my breasts and curled into a ball.
“You should stay in bed.”
I lifted my chin and looked her in the eyes. Panic, my nerves felt attached to high voltage. I whimpered, flipped to my belly and crawled. I had to know. The chart on the door. I needed to see what was on the digital board hanging there. I pulled myself along like an infant, pain rocking my body with each movement. I came to my target, collapsed and began to cry so hard I could barely breath.

Alien Adoration - Cover and Blurb Reveal

Good day! It's a super exciting day for me, as I'm finally revealing the cover and blurb for my upcoming release, Alien Adoration. This story is the first book in my Alien Next Door series, and my first Indie title.

I have had a great deal of help along the way with this story, and if all goes well, I'm hoping the story will be available on May 10, 2013.

So, here you go... Let me know what you think.

Alien Adoration by Jessica E. Subject

Erotic dreams fill her with need…

Night after night, Rachel fantasizes about her sexy, playboy neighbor. But in her small town, no one changes, least of all the bad boy next door. But when Luke rescues her not once but twice from disastrous dates, she dares to believe her knight in black leather armor may be the right man for her after all.

Until she learns the truth...

Life on Earth has never been easy for Luke. Stranded as a little boy, he struggled to craft an existence for himself, but he never forgot the first human he met--and he never stopped wanting to see her again. Returning to Hanton, Luke longs for Rachel. Yet nothing goes as he plans, and Rachel barely notices him. Convincing her he isn't like all the jerks she's dated means telling her the truth, but can she handle it?

Can she overcome her fears, or will she deny her alien adoration and leave him stranded once more?

And here's the cover, designed by the fabulous Fantasia Frog Designs...

Be sure to visit my blog on Wednesday, March 27, where I'm going to reveal the first excerpt from Alien Adoration.

Want to know if these stories are something you'd be interested in reading? Well, here are some excerpts from two of the stories:

From Satin Sheets in Space:

That’s it, I’m leaving. She didn’t need to stick around and be reminded of another night she’d been stood up by a blind date and passed over by every other available male.

After slipping her shoes on and grabbing her clutch, she headed for the door.

“Leaving so soon?”

She shivered at the sound of the deep, sexy voice. Spinning around, she gazed up at an enormous, captivating man. Very rarely did she meet a guy so much taller than herself. His black velvet justacorps fit tight across his broad shoulders, but not too snug. And the silk shirt lining his wide chest matched the color of her dress. Almost as if they were made for each other. I can only hope.

Flowing down his back, his long, thick, dark mane appeared to have feathers throughout. In the dim lighting, his hair, and even his skin had a faint blue glow. She couldn’t help but be enthralled by his presence; was sure she stood in front of him with her mouth hanging open.

“I…I’m going home.”

“When the night is still so young?” He brushed his hand down her bare arm. “What could be more fun at home? Perhaps you might even enjoy some company?”

How she’d love to spend the night in this man’s company, the toys in her nightstand long forgotten. But this had to be some kind of joke. She looked around for cameras, anxious faces. No one as hot as this man could want to spend a night with her. “It’s been a long day. I was stood up by my date, and my friends no longer need me to stick around.”

Great! She’d just told the guy she was alone. Might as well have put a target on my back.

He rested his hand on her hip, sending intense sexual energy zinging straight to her core. “You mean you wouldn’t want to enjoy an evening in my company? Because I’m your date.”

From Unknown Futures:

She was drawn back to the present as the crowd parted in front of her, like the Red Sea to reveal her charges. They walked along with the other new arrivals, oblivious to the multitude of curious looks they received. The blue, lanky Ginnunian male led his very pregnant terran wife toward her. Peering past the pair, V caught a glimpse of a dark-haired woman tucked closely behind them before the crowd closed in once again, grunting, squeaking, and clicking in communication.

She waved to get their attention, thankful her charges had arrived without incident. “Hi, I’m Flavia, but you can call me V. That’s what everyone here calls me.” Because no member of any other species on the station had been able to pronounce her name without it sounding vulgar in his or her language.

The Ginnunian stepped forward and surprised her by reaching out to shake her hand—not a custom for his people. “Hello, I’m Frey, and this is my wife, Carrie.”

She shook his hand and then his wife’s, trying to hold in her excitement at meeting someone from home.
Frey moved to the side, revealing the petite woman behind him. “And this is Jewel.”

V squealed. Unable to hide her exhilaration any longer, she wrapped her arms around Jewel. Not only was she from Earth, but she looked to be only a couple years younger than her. All the Terrans on-station were her parents’ age. For once, her unwavering loneliness would ebb, at least for a few days.

But her hug wasn’t returned, only met with a gasp. V stepped back. “I’m sorry, did I hurt you?”

Jewel shook her head, but wouldn’t make eye contact.

“I think she’s a little self-conscious about her scars,” Frey said.

V winced. Why did he have to mention them? Sure, she’d noticed, but she had friends with fins, feathers, and elephant ears. A few scars wouldn’t stop her from being social. Was that why she’d been asked to entertain Jewel during her stay?

TGIF and a Guest Blogger Today

Happy, Friday.
Please help me give a warm welcome to Aubrey Watt, who's here to talk about her book, Paragon. I have to tell you, I'm crushing all over this cover.

Hi everyone! I’m Aubrey Watt, and I want to thank Backwards Momentum for having me here! I just released my first full-length science fiction romance novel Paragon. It’s on sale for the next month for $2.99 and I’m giving away a free copy to a lucky commenter on this site. Here’s the summary:

In the middle of the Arizona desert, a hundred feet underground, the United States military is illegally developing the first emotionally sentient android. Classified top secret, the mission has failed to successfully awaken the first two androids created in the lab.
When brilliant neuroscientist Chal Davidson is called in to assist, the third android is just hours from being awakened.  By the time she realizes the vast implications of her work, it’s too late to stop the prototype’s development. Torn by her moral and scientific responsibilities, Chal is even more confused by the emotional connection she is starting to feel with the newly-created man.  The only hope she has is escape—for her and the android—and time is running out...

I was inspired to write Paragon after reading the book Wired by Douglas E. Richards. I wanted to write a story with a smart, sexy protagonist, and although this book has its share of action, the second half focuses on the budding romance between the two main characters. Alan (the android prototype) has to learn everything from the beginning – how to talk, how to feel, and especially how to love. This is a love story about discovering passion, and as Alan learns how to love, Chal begins to discover the passion that is hidden inside of her.
This is how they meet:

He floated now in the tank, attached with an IV to the liquid that would wake him from his unconscious rest. It was remarkable how much he looked like a normal human. Chal knew that, physically at least, he was as human as she was. It was just a matter of making sure his mind could weather the transition into consciousness. His dark hair waved in slow motion in the water. She watched him, for the first time taking in his appearance.
Alan.

He was handsome, and this was something that she had not prepared herself for. His body was perfect, chiseled and lean, and his facial features were decidedly masculine, dark eyebrows slanting across his brow, an aquiline nose.
His naked body bobbed slightly in the saltwater, and Chal adjusted the padding around the sides, not wanting him to bump his head on the tank walls. She moved slowly, carefully, but her hand accidentally touched the prototype’s limb. She let her fingers move on his skin. He felt warm to the touch, and Chal let his wet skin glide under the pads of her fingers.

Smooth. Like a baby. Yet full-grown, a man already on the outside. It was strange, and as Chal examined him she felt a mixture of emotions surge forward under her skin. Curiosity surpassed all of the rest, but it wasn’t a clinical curiosity as it had been in the past. Every animal she had worked with had been on the very low end of the Freitas consciousness spectrum. The difference between a baby rat and a full-grown rat had more to do with size and mobility than with intelligence. They could both run mazes, after all. But a human man is so different from a human infant that Chal trembled at the thought of waking the prototype up.
Her hand traced the line of his shoulder, his neck. She was curious who he would be once he woke up. Would he be a conscious person? Really? His mind would be an infant’s, although not for long. She would have to remember that, to make a point of remembering.

His face was calm as her hand made its way up to his cheek and rested there. Chal’s fingers stroked the skin at his temple absentmindedly.
What will you think when you wake up?

Spotlight - Alien Sex Ed series by Allie Ritch

Allie Ritch’s Alien Sex Ed Series

Alien Sex 101: When New Earthling Quinn makes love to his Allurian bride on their wedding night, he discovers a few surprises. Like the fact that losing his virginity to an Allurian woman is painful. He and Xindra are able to work things out, but they realize other interracial couples on their planet face similar problems. They start an Alien Sex Ed class, but this isn’t your ordinary anatomy lesson. This class is very hands-on and more than a little steamy. Xindra’s friend, Mera, is the first to benefit when she meets and falls for one of their students, Trett. As an Ibration, Trett doesn’t thrust during sex; his penis vibrates. That’s perfect for an Oquaran like Mera, who’s so sensitive she comes almost instantly and can’t stand a lot of chafing. When Xindra and Quinn notice more than one of their students checking each other out, they have to wonder. Could the romance between Trett and Mera be just the beginning?

Alien Sex 102:  As a Duosien, Katra’Ruma needs a perfectly controlled lover to hit her two T-spots and trigger her orgasm. Unfortunately, the only man she’s found who can do that is an overbearing, egotistical, irritating Brachoi male named Krux. Sure his four arms come in handy and are as arousing as his lickable cherry-toned skin, but the man drives her crazy. Out of bed, they do nothing but snipe at each other—or is that just foreplay?

Used to casual sex, Whitt discovers he’s in over his head when he falls for Spri, a Litting woman who considers lovemaking a sacred rite as binding as marriage. He should be running the other way. Instead, he finds himself seeing just how far he can push things before taking that final plunge.

Alien Sex 103:  Corporate spy by day and party boy by night, Varion thinks he has it all when he hooks up with fellow Sex Ed student, Benni. As a Flexian, Benni is a natural contortionist, able to get into sexual positions he has always fantasized about. She loves the way his race can shift their features and skin tone to look like other people. It’s all passion and good times until Varion starts to wonder if Benni only wants him because he can look like different men. And when Benni discovers Varion’s corporate espionage may destroy her job, she questions his motives in pursuing her. Is their relationship real or just a game that’s turned all too serious?

Used to being the shy young virgin, Pixie is shocked when Zeo, the fierce Nimanian student in her Sex Ed class, takes an interest in her. Step by step, Zeo awakens her sexuality and teaches her the joys of being a woman. He wants to mate with her in the tradition of his people, but Nimanian sex can be rough. Can Zeo be gentle enough for the woman he loves? Does Pixie have enough strength to match him?

Alien Sex 104:  Huv has always liked the ladies, but he’s getting to the age when he’s ready for more than one-night stands. After meeting Lexy, he finds it very easy to fall for the sexy alien in her female form, but that’s only half the equation. Lexy is Cedecian. Every month, her race changes genders. Huv suffers a sexual identity crisis as he struggles to accept that the woman he loves may also be the man he loves. For an Allurian who is used to being strictly straight, it’s an adjustment Huv isn’t sure he can make.

Expecting Glynn to pop the question, Deina is shocked when he instead asks her to have his baby…or at least try. As a Semhym, Glynn must find a woman with just the right chemistry to help him spill his seed before it’s too late. He thinks Deina may be the one, but he wants to be sure. In order to win her over, he’ll have to gamble for the highest stakes of all: sex, love, and the rest of their lives.

Excerpt from Alien Sex 101 (adult content):

Quinn was thirty-six years old, and he was about to make love to a woman for the first time in his life. The thought made him laugh as he settled their luggage in the honeymoon suite. Over the years, he’d had more one-night stands, quick lays, and weekend flings than almost anyone else living in Trilanta, the largest city on the space-hub planet of the same name. But he’d never cared enough about those women to call it lovemaking. Xindra was different.

She wasn’t just another conquest, and she wasn’t even from New Earth like he was. His beautiful Allurian was everything he’d never realized he wanted or needed until she stole his heart. And as of two hours ago, she was his wife. They were now officially Mr. and Mrs. Phlyx-Nigel.

Quinn kept waiting for panic to kick in—the commitment phobia that had kept him a bachelor for so long—but it didn’t surface. Instead he felt the sinuous warmth of lust and anticipation rolling through his veins. Because Xindra was special and because he’d wanted to make sure she believed that right down to her soul, he’d waited for their wedding night to make her his. Now he felt like he’d been through months of hellish foreplay. He was ready to explode.

“Finally, I’ve got you all to myself.” Xindra purred as she wrapped her arms around him.

Her head only came as high as his chin, but Quinn knew his wife’s trim body held incredible strength. He felt her breasts squash against his chest as he pulled her closer and luxuriated in their firmness. She had to feel how firm certain parts of him were growing as well. Looking down into her deep lavender eyes, he felt love flood him until it overwhelmed and then mingled with his lust.

“You are so incredibly beautiful.” In all his life, he’d never delivered a line so sincerely, so without thought.

Her answering smile undid him until he couldn’t remember his own name. She lifted onto her toes just as he dove for her mouth. They joined somewhere in the middle. The hard aggression of his lips met the soft pillow of hers. Then they were slanting and shifting while their tongues wrestled. By the time they broke for air, his pulse pounded like a jungle drum in his temples and groin. He was fully erect, and the sight of her flushed cheeks made everything jerk tighter inside him.

Clearly reveling in her power, Xindra flashed her white teeth and backed out of reach with a teasing glint in her eyes. She slipped out of her shoes and started a slow, sensuous dance as she reached for the closure seal on her dress. Quinn’s eyes feasted on the erotic curve of her waist, the flare of her hips, and the gentle rocking motion of her tight backside. The dress was open all the way to her tailbone now, but he caught only the barest glimpses of pale skin beneath her long, curly locks. Her hair was such a dark purple it was nearly black. It glimmered like strands of royal satin.

“Well, husband, do you plan to consummate this marriage fully dressed, or would you like to join me?” She slipped out of one sleeve and then the other until the bodice of her dress clung by a thread to her tightly furled nipples.

To his surprise, Quinn laughed aloud just from the sheer joy of being with her. He was going to remember this night for the rest of his life.

“Impatient?” he teased her, already sliding his own shirt open. “Your relatives did have a few ribald suggestions for me at the reception.” The bawdy Allurians had managed to make him blush, which wasn’t easy.

“Maybe we should explore some of those suggestions,” she replied, but she was distracted now.

He discarded his shirt and watched with pleasure as she licked her lips. Then she dropped her dress to the floor with a hushed slide and plop, making his mouth water. She was stark naked underneath.

“The support is built in,” she explained saucily.

He was too busy trying not to lose it to respond. His belt hit the floor with a thud at the same time that he slipped out of his shoes. Good balance was the only thing keeping him standing as he tore off his socks and dropped his pants, although the pole between his legs could have propped him up at that point. Quinn had never felt so hard or desperate in his entire life. Which was precisely why he left his underwear on. If she handled him bare right now, he’d never last long enough to get inside her.

With a growl, he shot forward and swung her into his arms. She giggled into his mouth as he kissed her and then squealed in delight when he threw back the covers and tumbled them both onto the bed.

“You’re so beautiful,” he chanted over and over again. “You don’t know what you’re doing to me.”

Even the floral scent of her hair stroked him from the inside out. She was a banquet, and he was ravenous. He sifted his hands through her locks, feeling each purple curl caress his fingertips and twine around his knuckles and wrists. Shifting his mouth up from her swollen lips, he kissed her dainty nose, her thick eyelashes, and the feminine curve of her ear. The hot spot over her pulse point was next while he swept his hands up and down from her shoulders to her fingertips.

Her nipples pouted for attention. She gasped and moaned when he attacked one and then the other with his starving mouth, sucking and licking and nipping while his fingers tweaked the other one. The dip between her breasts was fascinating, too. It carried her natural scent and the first drops of perspiration. After pecking a trail down to her bellybutton, he penetrated the indentation with the tip of his tongue and buried his face in her gently rounded tummy. His marauding hands stroked her from knee to thigh. By the gods, she was so soft and sweet. He’d never get enough of her.

Quinn cupped her breasts with hungry palms and gave them one more squeeze before all his attention centered on the treasure between her legs. He cocked an eyebrow in surprise as he explored new territory. Unlike New Earthling women, she wasn’t curly and coarse down below. Instead, she had very short, perfectly straight hairs that formed a pelt over her mons. When he ran his fingers through this novel down, he discovered it was as fine and soft as cat’s fur and just as thick. He felt her shiver.

“A natural purple,” he mused, which made her chuckle.
