Excerpts:
Excerpt 1 (PG)
“We need to talk.”
Tossing the clothes and keys inside, she stood in the entrance, blocking his view of her home. “No, we needed to talk last Saturday, last Sunday, or Monday even. Not today. It’s too late. I get the message. You’ve avoided me all week, because you weren’t away on business. I heard you enough times slamming cupboards, drawers, and arguing with the voices in your head.”
“With my brother.”
“Whatever. Plenty of time to come over and talk.”
She ducked inside and shut him out, but couldn’t quite latch the door, Chal obviously pushing on it from the other side.
“I know what you are.” The words came out in barely a whisper, but loud enough for her to quit fighting him. “I know what that thing is on the floor behind you, and even though it’s giving me a killer headache, I’m still here because, as I said, we need to talk.”
Grabbing the front of his shirt, Angela yanked him inside, and locked the world out. “Fine, what do you know?”
Excerpt 2 (Adult)
Resting his palm on her hip bone, he resisted the urge to scoop her up in his arms and take her to the bedroom. Could living in this part of the world be so easy for his kind? “What about you? Could you fall in love with an alien?”
She smiled, her body relaxing again. “I am absolutely sure I could.”
“What about a regular human being?” Slowly gathering her skirt up her legs, he waited for her answer. Would she reject him?
“Could I fall in love with someone from Earth? Sure.” She moved her hand down and began to rub his inner thigh. “If that someone is you.”
Lust oozed out of her pores, accelerating his desire. He sat up, anxious to kiss her sweet lips. So soft and tender. She wrapped her arms around his neck and leaned back, pulling him on top of her. Chal plunged his tongue into her mouth the way he wanted to experience other parts of her.
Angela held the hem of his sweater, drawing the material up until he was forced to draw back for a moment to get the dang thing off. As she trailed her palms up and down his back, Chal slipped his hands under the skirt of her dress. He yearned for more. All of her. No internal warnings with his neighbor. Every inch of his being encouraged him on, to make the ultimate connection with the woman who said she could love an alien.
Clasping her waist, he ran his thumbs along the edge of her undergarments. With a throaty moan, she thrust toward him. Encouragement?
He lifted his head and gazed into her honey-colored eyes. “Do you want this?”
She nodded and pulled him back down, claiming his mouth the way he yearned to claim her. When she elevated her hips, he slid his fingers beneath her undergarments and shimmied them down her thighs.

EXCERPT:

While Yushka gets his duffel bag in the back seat, I lean against the side of the Corolla and stretch my arms on top of its roof. “You got everything?” “Yeah.” He lifts the bag over his shoulder and tilts his head in direction of the front door. “We good to go?” My pulse beats a little faster at the thought of him dropping that bag on my bedroom floor and lifting me in his arms instead. I’m so excited to be with him, I simmer inside, aching to touch and hold him. I want to have all of him at once, right now. A spark of amusement plays in his gorgeous Asian eyes as he waits for me to make a move. “What’s on your mind, Princess?” Holding his gaze, I smile, my fingers tapping a beat on the car hood to buy some time because I don’t know what to reply. I have a feeling whatever might come out of my mouth now, like I can’t wait to rip those clothes off you or I’m going to make you scream, will sound too cheesy. Why do we need to put our attraction into words, anyway? Once we’re home, there’ll be no reason to talk that much. We’ll do the talking with our more-than-capable hands and … um … mouths. I tap a quick rap before stepping back from the car. “Come on.” “Okay.” Widening his smile, he follows me to the front entrance. I unlock and push the wood door open. “I hope your bag’s not too heavy. The elevator doesn’t work.” “When are they gonna fix it?” “Huh, good question.” I step forward, but when in the doorway, I spin to hold the door open for him. “I have no idea.” “No?” With a raised brow, he passes me. Just then, I move toward him, chest-to-chest, blocking him and his thick bag between myself and the doorframe. “Oh!” He laughs. As the door pushes into my back, squeezing me tighter against him, I put my hands on his waist. First above his clothes––the thick leather jacket and his shirt––then sneaking underneath both of them, my fingers splaying on his warm skin and stroking him. Completely stuck, he tilts his head and stares into my eyes, his own sparkling with playfulness. “What are you up to?” “You have a problem?” I move my hands out from beneath his shirt and go downward to palm his tight ass cheeks, pulling his crotch to me. My lower stomach and increasingly heating inner thighs seek to meet his. I want to be so near him he’ll feel my lust, and I want his lust to grow, too. I need us to join and be a match, a melting pot of desire, irresistible and untamable. “I have to bribe you?” he asks, voice lower, and leans down to kiss me. How did he guess? At the warm touch of his parted lips, delight rushes through me as if I’d had a shot of alcohol. He retreats his face a few inches, enough to have a view of what he just kissed. “This good enough for you?” His voice comes out husky, a bit short of breath. With his free hand, he strokes and kneads my butt. “One more,” I mouth with the next exhale of air. Though the door bores painfully into my back, I don’t want to move, loving the feel of being so close to Yushka, so intimate. It’s amazing how instantaneous and intense our connection is. Just wait till we get our clothes off. Again, his warm lips land on mine, and we kiss greedily, nose-to-nose, wet tongues playing with each other. My inner pussy muscles clench, remembering too well what it’s like to have his cock inside. I breathe faster. A growing hardness in his crotch presses against me, provoking more tightening. Oh, God. Hot wetness glides down my pussy, wetting my panties. So ready, so soon… I mew into his mouth, and he rewards me with a guttural response, our mouths practically eating each other. But this isn’t the right place. We need to move and play this torturous game and its grand finale somewhere else. Releasing his lips, I gasp from our separation, but still manage to pull away. “Fuck, you’re hot.” He inhales deeply and looks up, feverish eyes widening and trying to refocus. As I step backward, forcing the door to open again, cold evening air sneaks between our heated bodies. “Let’s go,” I say with a croak, my chest heaving. He gives a small nod and steps inside the low-lit lobby.

Darryl sank into his chair, form-fitted by age. With his foot, he brushed the papers and dishes on the ottoman to the floor. He winced at the crash, but had little motivation to clean it up or do anything. Stretching out his legs, he rested them atop the cleared surface and closed his eyes. Opening them meant he would see her again, dressed in her pressed and polished uniform or with him in bed. But the memories of Beth simply messed with his head. She was gone forever. Nothing he said or did would ever bring her back.
He cringed at the abrupt stabbing pain in his chest. No one said living with a broken heart was easy. He’d known the risks of dating her, but his awareness did nothing to prepare him for the agony of losing her.
Though a military woman marrying a civilian remained a rare occurrence at Beth’s base, they’d celebrated their seventh anniversary four months ago, right before she deployed for the last time.
A knock interrupted his memories. Darryl flicked his eyes open and stared at the door. Perspiration beaded his skin. The last time someone had knocked—most rang the doorbell—bad news had followed. Two weeks ago. And he’d holed up inside ever since, only emerging for Beth’s funeral.
He set his feet on the floor before walking on wobbly legs toward the entrance. What dark tidings would he receive?
Palms slick from sweat, he turned the knob. Catching sight of the two people on his stoop, he stepped back with a startled gasp. No way the people standing in front of him existed. He had to be dreaming.
The man in full military dress gave him a quick nod. “Mr. Malloy?”
He swallowed, his throat suddenly dry. “Yes.”
“I have a delivery for you.” The man touched the woman’s back, ushering her forward. “She’s all yours. Take care of her.”
She? His? But.... Beth had died. He’d watched her body lowered into the ground, received the country’s flag. No way could his wife be standing there. “There must be some mistake. Beth died.”
Strolling down the walkway, the man paused and glanced back at him. “That’s not Sergeant Malloy. It’s her clone.”
Hardly an it. Rather a copy of his wife. Darryl griped the doorjamb. His mind spun. Human cloning had just become public knowledge. And those created remained the property of the military. “Shouldn’t she be in a lab somewhere? Or training for a mission?”
The man, at his parked Humvee, shook his head. “We had special instructions to bring her here should anything happen to the sergeant.”

Hunger pierced Rower’s body like a thousand tiny needles digging into his skin. Food wouldn’t fulfill his need. Only sex, the lust-filled cries and fragrant scent of a woman or two in the throes of ecstasy. And he had a club filled with females from all over the universe to choose from.
Staring at Kaye and the Terran female on the dance floor, he wished at least one of them would have agreed to his offer. But, no such luck. Probably for the best anyway with Kaye’s fragile body and her new lover’s timidness. At least he assumed they were lovers, the way they stared into each other’s eyes as they ground against each other. One or both would likely freak out as soon as he started to feed, unaware of his incubus ways. The last woman he’d been with had passed out, turned into a temporary stiff right after what she claimed was “the most intense orgasm of her life”.
A giggle came from behind him. Rower spun around to see Mizzie and Cynan huddled together and tapping away at Mizzie’s wrist com unit. Beautiful women, yet untouchable with their air of confidence that seemed to keep others away, and their solid relationship. Though, he’d heard rumors they occasionally invited another person to join them in their sexual play. If only he could be so lucky.
A minute later, Kaye bustled toward them, her transparent exoskeleton turned a cloudy grey color, the Terran hot on her heels.
“I have to leave.” Kaye ran her hands across her suit, snapping the pieces together for a tight seal. “There’s a rain warning. If I don’t go now, I’ll be stuck here for the night. Victoria’s coming with me.”
Rain? Not a chance. His reptilian skin granted him the ability to sense the presence of water, predict the wet weather he avoided as well. While precipitation did lay ahead in the future forecast, it wasn’t coming tonight. Had Kaye’s sensors malfunctioned? “Um, are you—”
Cynan shoved him back. “Okay.” She glanced past her petite friend and winked at Mizzie. “Have fun. Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.”
Sneaky ladies. They must have set their friend up, tapped into the program that controlled her sensors. When Kaye was out of earshot, he wrapped his arms over Mizzie and Cynan’s shoulders. “What naughty friends you are, making your roommate rush out of here like that. I think you both deserve a spanking.”
Cynan cupped the cloth covering his groin area, giving his balls and cock a light squeeze. “Sounds like fun. What do you think, Miz?”
The breathing apparatus on the back of the liggle’s head opened and closed. A wry smile spread across her pale lips. “I’m game. It’s been a while since we included someone of the male persuasion.”
So the rumors were true. His cock hardened and he yearned to set it free from behind his loin cloth, feel the soft touch of the two women with him, slide it in and out of their slick pussies. If they truly meant what they said.
Rower ignored his fear of rejection and led them forward. “To the dungeon then.” The less time they had to travel for a private spot, the less likely the women were to back out.
Standing before the large set of double doors at the back of the club, he stared into the retina scanner then waited for the locks to disengage. After the click, Rower opened the door on the right and allowed his lady friends to enter first.
The musky scent of sex and the moans of many engaged in the act invaded his senses. He wiped salivation from the corner of his mouth, ignoring the tingle under his skin. Swallowing his hunger, he led Cynan and Mizzie down the dimly lit hallway, neither of them pausing to gape at the scenes they passed. Many rooms were already occupied, all open to curious onlookers. In one, he spotted his friend Clarsjon, a large insectoid, fucking a female grey as if his phallus functioned like a humanoid. The woman’s aura radiated throughout the space, appealing to his appetite, drawing him in to feast.
Soft fingers tugged on his hand, dragging his attention back to the women he’d invited inside the private establishment.
“So, are you going to follow through on your threat?” Mizzie leaned in close, brushing her breasts across the back of his arm. “Or should we go ahead and play without you?”

Victoria headed to the dining hall, empty except for two greys at the table farthest from the buffet. They eyed her and whispered to each other behind their long, spindly-fingered hands. She grabbed what looked to be a sandwich with purple bread and green toppings—nothing fuzzy, so she set it on her tray and hurried back to her room. No point in sticking around where she wasn’t wanted.
While she ate, Victoria studied the class textbook on her tablet. Their first lab was to study various cognitive reactions to differing objects. Kaye had already decided they were going to study the heart rate of individuals in their reactions to various races at the school. Sure her partner just wanted to prove how much everyone hates Terrans, Victoria agreed anyway. No point in arguing. She’d already observed plenty of other cues indicating their disdain for her.
Fifteen minutes before the scheduled lab time, she left, heading to the psychology wing. The hall lights had been dimmed compared to the daytime and gave the place an eerie glow. Though the greys had denied ever abducting anyone from Earth, Victoria might have believed otherwise if she happened to meet one along the way. Her pulse raced as she eyed the numbers on each door, trying to locate the correct one.
“C’mon, already.”
Victoria gasped, placing her palm on her chest.
“Oh, come on. Don’t tell me I managed to scare a Terran.”
“My name is Victoria.” She’d had enough of being referred to by her home planet, as if everyone on Earth was related and possessed the same personality and motivation. “And you just caught me off guard. It’s late, and I’m tired.”
“That’s strange.” Kaye held the door open as Victoria ducked into the room. “I thought your kind thrived at night.”
She surveyed the area, rubbing her arms. “Not me. I just want to get this over with and return to bed.” A wave of sleepiness washed over her at the thought.
“Fine.” Kaye’s antennae stood straight up rather than curving forward like they normally did. She’d lost her six inch glass claws, her exoskeleton only covering her arms down to her knuckles like a pair of fingerless gloves. “You go into the closet and record the results. I’ll stay out here to welcome our test subjects and hook them up, okay?”
Victoria cocked her head to the side. For the first time since they’d been partnered, Kaye had actually asked her opinion. “I guess.”
“It’s just that if they see you before the test, it will skew the results. I can’t help it if everyone feels that way about your kind. It’s just the way it is.”
With a nod, Victoria entered the cramped smaller room, not much bigger than a broom closet. If she didn’t know any better, she would have believed Kaye felt bad about the discrimination. Was the leabu beginning to soften? She could only hope.

Twenty students arrived to be tested, a record number compared to any one-day lab Victoria had been involved in back on Earth. She ensured the results had saved to her files before forwarding a copy to Kaye, who was on her way out, probably wanting to get away from her as soon as possible. After shutting down all of the equipment, she left the tiny room. A whistled breath startled her. She shuffled back a step and glanced around for the source of the noise. The leabu sat in the corner of the room, her knees pulled up to her chin.
“What are you still doing here?” And why hadn’t she heard her come back inside?
Kaye sighed. “Just waiting out the rain.”
Rain? A sudden chunk of information popped into Victoria’s mind before she opened her mouth to ask why. Leabus couldn’t handle rain that had even the slightest bit of acidity. It would burn her skin. “You live off campus then?” And far away, too, considering all the nearby buildings were connected by underground tunnels and skyways.
Kaye nodded, her lids appearing heavy over her eyes. “I might end up crashing here for the night if it doesn’t let up soon.”
“Oh.” Victoria crossed one arm in front of her, clasping the other. “You don’t have any other place to go?”
“No, but it’s okay. I’m used to it.”
Rubbing her hand down her arm, Victoria gulped. “Um, you’re welcome to stay in my room for a bit. It’s got to be more comfortable than the floor.”
Kaye’s ears wiggled, but the smile that had earlier accompanied the gesture never came. “Really? You want me to stay with you?”
Rolling her eyes, Victoria glanced away. Why did this have to be so hard? “I know I’m just a lowly Terran. Forget I said anything.”
“No!” Kaye jumped to her feet. “It’s just, I never expected you to offer, with your kind.... With me being so rude to you.”
Victoria shrugged. “I just thought it would be better than being stuck in the lab all night.”
“Are you sure you don’t mind?”
“It’s up to you.” She refused to force the leabu, or anyone, to come to her room. It was a kind gesture she would have offered anyone. “But the invitation stands.”
“Thank you. That would be wonderful. Let me call my roommates to let them know where I’ll be.”
By the time they reached Victoria’s room, she was ready to crash again. Only a few hours awake, she yearned to sleep away the last day of no classes. If not for the constant ping of Kaye’s com unit—calls from her friends asking if she’d been drugged by the Terran—she would have fallen asleep in the lift ride up to her floor. Yet, she didn’t want to be rude to her guest.
“Go ahead and take my bed.” With a quick switch of the pillows, she made the tiny couch into her own sleeping area. It didn’t matter where she ended up bunking because, the moment her head hit the pillow, she would fall fast asleep.
Kaye nodded. “Okay, thank you.” She pressed a button on her shoulder, and her exoskeleton peeled off with a whoosh, clicking as piece after piece folded into each other until it sat at her feet. The only part of her protection left was the air tanks plugged directly into the flesh on her back.
Victoria gasped and turned away, trying to forget the image of the leabu’s naked porcelain skin. Her delicate feminine curves were barely hidden under the clear suit to begin with, but she had seen much more with it off, Kaye’s fragility, but also the rosy peaks of her breasts and the bare folds of skin between her legs. No matter how hard Victoria tried to clear the picture from her mind, she couldn’t, desire speeding up her heart rate and blasting away the tiredness that had plagued her moments ago. How was she supposed to sleep with a naked woman in her room? Leabu or not, Kaye awakened her lust the way no woman on Earth had been able to. Not for a long time, anyway.
“I know I look weird without my suit on, but it’s not exactly comfortable to sleep in.”
“Weird?” Victoria cleared her throat and dared to take another glance, not wanting her guest to think her rude. “Not the word I’d use.”

A Stellar Affair - Guest Post by Laurel Richards (@Laurel_R_books) #scifirom

Whether you believe in psychic ability or not, you’ve probably seen on TV where the police occasionally consult a psychic on a case. Nothing the psychic “sees” is admissible in court, of course, but any evidence he or she leads the police to could help put the bad guy away. Well, what if psychic ability was really strong in some people, and those individuals were used for military purposes? What ethical dilemmas might arise out of that?

In A Stellar Affair, I have the hero, Jack, struggling with that very problem as he uses his psychic ability to extract valuable intelligence from the minds of the enemy. Jack wants to save lives, but his ability also makes him empathetic to the captives he interrogates. When he meets Ardra, he starts to feel like the two of them are no more than pawns in a war neither of them started. And while they’re supposed to be on opposite sides, the attraction between them grows into something far more powerful than hate.

A mind can be a powerful weapon, but the human heart can be even stronger. A Stellar Affair is a sweet/sensual romance that plays out the battle of the mind and the heart against the backdrop of interstellar conflict.

***

Blurb: Sometimes the heart leads and the mind must follow.

Ardra has no idea why she’s been abducted and thrown into a Roimiran interrogation room. She is simply a Tetch botanist on her way to a distant planet, not an enemy spy. She’s scared of the piercing eyes of the mind-reading precept assigned to uncover whatever secrets her mind might be holding. But even more worrying is the strange soul-deep connection between her and her captor.

Jackson Deimos excels at slipping in and out of someone’s memories to retrieve military intelligence deliberately hidden away—even from an unwitting carrier. But Ardra’s brain is a labyrinth of defenses he’s never encountered before. Plus, her beauty shouldn’t be this much of a distraction.

As their battle of wits and wills wears on, their emotions are the first to betray them. But if Jack can’t break through Ardra’s barriers, his superiors will turn her over to someone who will—by force. Leaving Jack having to choose between doing his duty or following his heart.

Excerpt:

When Jack went to visit Ardra a couple of days later, she was even more obstinate than usual. He had given Nash the name Stevin to cross-reference, but he wanted to see if he could find out more from Ardra herself. Although she was still under medical supervision at the infirmary, she looked much better, and her powers of resistance had returned. He was having trouble keeping his focus.

“This would be a lot easier if you cooperated,” he told her.

She sat on the narrow bed with her back against the wall and her arms crossed.

“You read minds,” she said hotly. “Read this.”

“That wasn’t very nice,” he scolded her, but he had to repress a smirk. “All right. You win for now. If you don’t want to share anything with me today, I won’t push you. I just thought maybe you’d want to know why you woke up talking to Stevin.”

She frowned at him. “I did?”

“Yes.”

When she didn’t say anything else, he let it go. “Fine. Maybe you’ll want to talk about it later.” He glanced over his shoulder. “Why don’t we see about getting you checked out of here?”

“So I can race back to my comfy prison cell?” she asked.

“Are you unhappy with your room?”

She looked at him askance, but he could tell she wasn’t nearly as angry at him as she wanted him to believe. “Only with its function.”

He sat back. “You want your freedom?”

“Of course I want my freedom,” she snapped.

“And you think walking out of here will solve everything and give you that liberty?”

She stalled for a moment. “I certainly wouldn’t expect you to understand. You’re just after a damn number. You don’t care about me.”

Was she finally admitting she could have the information he wanted?

“I am after a number,” he told her honestly, “but I’m also trying to help you. You think you can ever be free with a Tetch download jackknifed in your skull?
