Mutual attraction grows as the walls of the space ship close in, and they come to an arrangement that satisfies them both, while allowing them professional distance. The distance doesn’t last, not as they grow to understand themselves…and each other as someone who just fits.

Shields strode from the room, his gear already
packed and waiting in the briefing room. He hadn’t settled into the base.
Knowing he’d be flying soon, there hadn’t been much to unpack. In the small
briefing area, the rest of the crews waited in full uniform. Annalina sat in
the corner, isolated and flipping through a magazine. Anderson, the tiny boned,
frail looking dick sat between the two other woman who would go on the
missions—one older and one painfully young. One other man, much older and with
chemist experience rounded the group.
Shields took the open seat next to Annalina. “Hey,
Captain. How are you? Massage go all right? I was thinking of scheduling one.”
She didn’t glance away from her magazine. “You
should. They’re wonderful, and Missy is a pro—who books out six month in
advance.”
He leaned closer, loving her tough-nut exterior.
“Well, damn. Maybe you could give me the lay version. You look like a woman who
knows what to do with hot oil, candles, and sheets.”
“If you mean I look like I know how to cover a man
in oil, set him on fire, and use a sheet to dispose of the body—you’re right.”
She set down her magazine, but he didn’t miss the smirk on her face. “How’d it
go in there?”
“How it always goes. I told them who I wanted to
work with; they told me they’d put me with whoever the hell they want, and then
I left. I’m heading to ship.”
“You got assigned a ship?” She sat straighter. “So
you’re going to captain a ship.”
“Makes sense, doesn’t it? I’ve done these long
stretches before, and everyone else in here,” he motioned to the rest of the
room, not caring who listened, “has limited experience. I’ve been there before,
too. So that helped. I’m guessing Aaron and maybe you will get a plane.”
“Really?” Her eyes lit up then cooled to
disinterest. She was a smart one. If she didn’t get her own plane this time,
she would after this adventure.
“Yep. Amy is too young, and Anderson is too much of
a dick.”
“Hey,” Anderson protested. “That’s uncalled for.”
Shields
winked at Annalina and stood up. “Whatever. I’m outa here. I’ll be on Ship
Three. Good luck.”

New Sci-Fi on Television Recap - What shows have you seen?
Hello peeps! Hope you're managing to stay warm wherever you are. It's cold here in Southwestern Ontario, with the temps dipping down below freezing overnight. We don't have any snow, but I'm sure that's to come.
Anyway, back in August--when it was much warmer--I spotlighted some of the upcoming sci-fi television shows that would be premiering this fall. Well, all those shows have premiered now, and I'm going to recap them and talk about the ones that I have seen.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
While I've seen every episode, I'm often interupted at this time period. 8 PM is the time we put our children to bed, so I don't always see full episodes. And because superheroes are very much my husband's "thing", I take my turn and let him watch the full show. What I have seen, I've loved. And they did explain why Agent Coulson is alive, in case you were wondering.
Almost Human
I missed the first episode of the show--that's what happens when we have to wait until November for a show to premiere. But on Monday, I did catch the second episode. (My husband's turn to get the kids to bed.) The episode was about sex bots. Pretty cool! And I love how the show combines science, but also emotion. Even Dorian (an android) deals with the struggles of being seen as not quite human. I'm really looking forward to more of this show.
Orphan Black
I caught the occasional episode of this show. It's a great concept, but if you miss an episode, it can be very confusing as you try and catch up. See, the main character is a clone. And she discovers this when she sees herself jump in front of a subway train. As the show progresses, she finds more and more clones of herself, and joins forces with them to destroy the company who created all of them. But the clones are being killed just as fast as she is discovering them.
The Tomorrow People
This is another show that we try and catch regularly. It really is great to see so many sci-fi shows on network television. And available in Canada, too. :) The next stage of human evolution is here. But, of course, there are many who want to use it for their own gain, and others who simply want to destroy these people. So, they are in hiding. But it's hard for many of them to say goodbye to their old lives to remain underground. I like it! *Note: The MC is played by Robbie Amell, a Canadian, and younger cousin to Stephen Amell from Arrow.
As for The 100 and Star-Crossed, I haven't seen those. Not sure if any of the networks here in Canada have picked them up as they have other CW shows.
So, which of these shows have you seen, and what do you think of them? Any other sci-fi shows that I should be watching?

What's up with the planet Mars?
Good day! September is finally here. :) One of my kids is back to school, and the other will be soon, which means more time to write. Yay!
Anyway, I've been seeing a lot of things posted across the web lately about our closest neighboring planet, Mars.
What's going on? Well, have you heard of MARS ONE? It is a not-for-profit organization that plans to establish a human settlement on Mars in the year 2023. And new crew will arrive every two years, leading to the growth of the colony. Cool, eh? What was once fiction is becoming our reality. The only catch is, once you leave Earth, you will not be coming back. Here's more information.
Plus, NASA is looking at the idea of HIBERNATION for those traveling to Mars in the future. Not exactly cryogenics, but a first step. Here's an article on Space.com.
And while we on Earth are trying to get to Mars, there is a new study that suggests life on Earth may have originated on the Red Planet. Learn more at Space.com.
So, are we voyaging to a new planet, or simply returning home?
I find all of this not only fascinating, but inspiration for so many stories. How about you?

Coming Soon

Sci-Fi on television - What do you watch?
Hello peeps! Well, the last heat wave broke and another is upon us. I've started watching a new sci-fi show called Under The Dome. It's based on Stephen King's novel of the same title. It's on Global here in Canada. Here's a preview for those who haven't seen it.:
Anyway, it got me thinking about sci-fi on television. There have been many over the years that I have watched whether dramas or comedies. Star Trek: TNG and Voyager were must watches for me. I also enjoyed The Jetsons, Space: Above and Beyond, ALF, Lois & Clark, Quantum Leap, Out of this World, Smallville, The X-Files, The Outer Limits, Earth 2, 3rd Rock from the Sun, and many more that I can't think of right now.
And there are many more premiering in the fall. But, I'm going to save them for another post.

Dystopian Fiction - Is this what we expect for our future?
My release from two days ago is the second story in The Underground series, which takes place in a dystopian world where a corporation runs the city, changing the laws to best suit them. And that got me thinking about the recent popularity of dystopian worlds in fiction and film.
Is this what our future holds? A world where everything has been destroyed, and remnants of humanity must figure out how to survive again? Or what about a world where social classes are further defined as in The Hunger Games? Will corporations run the cities rather than a government of the people? Will the government control who we are allowed to marry as in Matched? Will there be domes that keep communities confined, keeping them safe from destruction or separating them from the rest of the world? What about aliens? Will they take over the world, leaving humans to survive on the fringe?
These are just some of the examples of the future world in dystopian stories I have read. Is this what we believe future generations will experience?
Or perhaps these dystopias offer readers and viewers something different. In all of these stories, good triumphs over evil, people survive and live on. It may take the entire series rather than one story, but it does happen. These stories are ultimate survival stories, extreme situations that have the world, not just a few, fighting to stay alive and find a happy ending. Do we as readers want more than just the regular old troupes? Personally, I enjoy a variety of stories, but I find I'm cheering for society as a whole at the end of any dystopian fiction, rather than just a few characters in other stories.

So when deciding on a particular type of technology for Gethyon’s universe, it was a logical choice. Crystophile technology is the norm, and a field in which Gethyon himself excels. At one stage in the story, his knowledge pays his way. But at the beginning, it’s a piece of crystophilic technology – a CHI device (crystalline holographic imager) – that lands him in trouble in the first place.
Excerpt:
As the door closed behind his grandfather, Gethyon rose and went to the table. A large, clear octagonal crystal lay nestled in a protective bed of fabric, glittering faintly in the slivers of light that trickled beneath the edges of the black curtains. An Χ—the company emblem of the ancient Greek letter chi taken from the acronym for Crystalline Holographic Imager—was carved into one facet of the device. Gethyon traced the emblem, a rare smile touching his face. This was his one treasure, the one sure thing he had. Lifting it from its box, Gethyon clutched the CHI in his hands and activated it. A representation of the galaxy filled his room with a translucent blackness. Stars glittered and planets glowed before his eyes.
Take me away from here… He stared deep into the image, his longing to be out there burning in his chest. Take me far away.
Something within him stirred, forcing him to focus deep inside the image. Warmth flowed from his chest, through his arms and into the crystal. Suddenly, the image opened and surrounded him; the room transformed into the dark void of open space, the stars orbiting him in slow rotation, a supernova within the grasp of his free hand.
Gethyon gasped in shock and dropped the CHI device; the illusion vanished, leaving the inactive crystal gleaming at his feet.

What DO Aliens Look Like? - part 2 - Science
Thank you for joining me on Backward Momentum! It's time for part two of What DO Aliens Look Like. Today I'm going to focus on some of the theories offered by the scientific community.
From "Through the Wormhole: What Do Aliens Look Like?" on the Science Channel, it is assumed that extraterrestrial life would be both carbon and water-based like us. But due to many factors, including differences in evolution and gravity, life on another planet could be very different from what we know on Earth. Life could be as simple as microbes. But will we ever be truly satisfied until we find intelligent life like us?
An article by Seth Shostak, Senior Astronomer, SETI Institute on Space.com suggests extraterrestrial life might be humanoid, like us. And at a former exhibit in Montreal, scientists displayed plausible displays of aliens that might live on other planets with what we would consider, extreme conditions. Those lifeforms resembled creatures on Earth who live in extremely high temperatures and in acidic conditions. Be sure to check out the flying whales, animals that look like plants, and more.

While writing my alien romances, I always ask myself, what DO aliens look like? Many have tried to explain what they might resemble, but all our guesses, both fictional and those based on science make the assumption aliens are carbon based lifeforms. What happens if they're not? The possibilities are endless.

In terms of writing, I have so many things going on. The release of Alien Adoration is set for May 10, so I'm getting everything ready to release this story. I'm sharing excerpts from this story every Wednesday on my blog as part of Hump Day Hook.
And I recently signed a contract for the second story in The Underground series, Never Gonna Desert You, with Decadent Publishing. Right now, I'm writing the third (and final) story in the series, Never Gonna Say Goodbye.
Here's a sneak peek at Never Gonna Say Goodbye:
Bright lights blinded Tim as he neared the main complex of The Underground. He raised his sweat covered arm in front of his eyes.
“Who’s there?”
“It’s Harris!” He expected to be stopped, glad for the security, even though the man with the light could care less about securing the complex from Planet Core spies.
“Thank, God.” Barnes lowered the light, his wife by his side. “We were beginning to think you’d deflected to the other side.”
“Never.” He blinked hard, taking a deep breath, trying to ignore the empty feeling in the pit of his stomach. “I had to play my part, submit to the leader of the rebels. He doesn’t suspect a thing.”
Barnes joined him on his trek inside, patting him on the back. “You will be rewarded for your sacrifices. Once we take down the rebellion, we’ll all wreak the benefits.”
“And I won’t have to live in this shithole anymore,” his wife said, her nose wrinkled.
He flashed her a cold smile. No, because you won’t be living at all. He had his own plan. A plan no one else knew about. The only plan that would destroy Planet Core forever.
When Jessica isn't reading, writing, or doing dreaded housework, she likes to get out and walk. Fast. But she just may slow down if there is a waterfall nearby.

Black Holes and Worm Holes
In science fiction, there are many phenomena in space that are mentioned, including black holes, and worm holes.
So, what do you think? Do you believe worm holes exist? Would you take the chance and travel through space or time by worm hole?

Black holes
- objects of extreme density with such strong gravitational attraction, that even light cannot escape
- formed by the collapse of individual stars
- small black holes and the more popular supermassive black holes
- thought to lie at the center of each universe
- gather mass from dust and gas around them
- "event horizon" is boundary around mouth of black hole where light loses its ability to escape
- objects aren't sucked into black holes, they fall into them
Worm holes
- a theoretical entity in which space-time curvature connects two distant locations or times
- not traveling faster than light, but taking a short cut through the fourth dimension, hyperspace
- in theory, they would collapse before anything could travel through them, but still most loved physical phenomena by sci-fi authors
- recent calculations suggest we may be able to prevent collapse of worm holes by using "exotic matter", which contains negative energy

Celebrating 1-year of Never Gonna Let You Go!
Good day! It's been an exciting month, with Unknown Futures celebrating its one-year book birthday, and the releases of Made For Her and Accidental Romance. Then I found out my sci-fi/futuristic/dystopian story Never Gonna Let You Go was nominated for the Love Romances (LR) Cafe's Best Of 2012 Awards in that genre category. The story ended up receiving honorable mention. :) And the nomination gave me the motivation I needed to write the next book in The Underground series, Never Gonna Desert You, which I shared an excerpt from last week.
Well, today is the book birthday for Never Gonna Let You Go. It released a year ago today, and was based on a story I originally wrote in my Science Fiction English class in high school. Here's a bit about the story:
Caught in a tangle of lies, Calla Jacobs must sort through the truth to discover where she truly belongs. A biologist for Planet Core, she finds herself ensnared in a web of deceit. Sent to Airondelle, she must work with a team to prepare the newly discovered planet for colonists from Earth. But the mission does not go as she expected. Her former lover, Erik Edwards, shuns her, sending Calla into the arms of Melina Holloway, their commander, for the attention she craves and more. A confrontation among the trio leaves her with a broken heart, and fleeing from the two people she trusted most.
Attempting to break free from the lies that bind her, she discovers Planet Core has deceived everyone. And when she returns to Earth, Calla learns just how far Planet Core’s control reaches.
Excerpt:
Pulling the camera from her backpack, Calla considered what might have happened if she’d remained in Holloway’s tent. Would they have kissed? Her stomach fluttered and dampness spread between her legs as she thought about Melina’s soft lips.
Wait! She wasn’t attracted to women, never had been before. Then why couldn’t she stop thinking about what Holloway’s lips would feel like on hers and all over her body?
She took a deep breath. Sexual relations of any kind are forbidden during the missions. While repeating those words over and over, she spotted a perfect place to set up for her study—a large crancait bush on the edge of the field where the rapat fed. The bright red berries decorated the bush in stark contrast to its deepgreen, oval-shaped foliage. She crept through the waist-high vegetation, trying to make as little noise as possible. Although the foreign planet had not been shaped by an ice age like Earth, it did boast fields all the way to the horizon similar to the prairies where she and Erik had grown up. Erik should be the one she thought about kissing, not Melina, not a woman. She knew everything about him, or once had. But Erik had turned into an asshole, and Melina wanted to be friends. Maybe more? Her body warmed at the thought.
On her way to the red-berried bush where she planned to take pictures of the creatures, she stopped to ensure she hadn’t spooked the herd while her mind wandered to places it shouldn’t. Good, they haven’t moved.
Arriving at the crancait, she spread out a blanket to lay her equipment on and turned to affix her camera to a tripod. She’d never gotten this close to the herd for her footage. She’d managed to remain downwind and the warm breeze not only helped to disguise her scent but also her movements.
With no natural predator—at least none she’d discovered—the rapat flourished on this part of the planet. Their round pig-sized bodies resembled the tapir of Earth, but with the addition of a longer, elephant-like trunk. Their lips smacked and teeth ground together as they ate their fill of grasses. The smell of their dung reminded her of molasses rather than that of any Earth animal.
After adjusting the camera to record video footage of their feeding and social behaviors, she sat down to write her notes. Instead, she could only think of Melina, and the moment in her tent, which could have led to something else, something more than friendship. Something she needed just as much. She sighed. I’m attracted to Melina. What does this mean?

Good day! I've been following io9 and The Galaxy Express to see what sci-fi and sci-fi romance movies we can look forward to this year. Here's a list of those I can't wait to see:
February 14, 2012 - Escape From Planet Earth
March 15, 2013 - Upside Down - while this movie has already released in Russia, it is set to release in the US this year. It's a film about two planets with opposite gravity, orbiting around their sun together. Here's the trailer. It's in English with French subtitles.

“Incoming message,” the computer chimed.
“Source located one nautical mile away, starboard.”
She brushed her hands across the console
and brought the video feed from the ship’s right hand side onscreen. The image
quivered, and she groaned when it finally became clear. A Moloxian starcruiser.

I just want to go home. During her search, the
crews of the few Moloxian scavenger ships she’d come across had been willing to
let her pass if she traded with them. But she had nothing left, only enough
food and fuel to reach Earth, and even then she’d be hungry during the last leg
of her journey.
“Play.” She decided to listen to their
demands, give them what they wanted, and move on. She had no other choice.
Starvation was a better alternative than providing the sexual services they’d
always hinted at. The Moloxians, though humanoid, had scale-covered bodies. So
incompatible with her own. She wouldn’t survive unscathed and didn’t sleep
around anyway.
“Prepare to be boarded.” The deep
computerized voice shook her. No slur, and therefore not Moloxian.
Who the hell
was he?
She didn’t have time to contemplate. Her
blood boiling, she gripped the arms of her chair. The creature, whatever
species he happened to be, planned to come onto her ship. No one boarded
without her permission, which she would not grant. At the sound of her
transporter, like the pitter-patter of rain on Earth, she leaped from her seat
and spun around. She grasped her bolt stunner and pointed it at the figure
materializing into solid form before her eyes.
With a huge outline, the male boarding
her ship would only bring her trouble. If his strength matched his size, she
had one option: to kill him. She took in his bare, broad chest, sculpted abs,
and muscled arms. His tanned skin shone with brilliance, as if the sun rested
behind him. She gazed up at his dark hair and warm brown eyes. He studied her
with an intense stare while his soft lips curved into a smile.
She gasped. “Diego?”
