Future Technology from The Underground series. Fiction is becoming reality. #SyFy #scifirom

Hello and thank you for joining me today! Last week, I talked about some of the music that inspired The Underground futuristic dystopian series. And today, I'm going to share some of the futuristic technology that is mentioned in the series.

Most of the technology that I used in the stories is based on my years of watching Star Trek, and also some Stargate SG-1.

One of the first things I mention is the portal, a doorway that connects to distant locations separated by spacetime. In the case of The Underground, the portal takes people from Earth to the distant planet, Airondelle, where Planet Core is trying to establish a colony. But these portals do not exist. There are no shortcuts through space or time. Or is there? Last year, NASA discovered that there are hidden portals in Earth's Magnetic Field. Not exactly the same as those in my story and in the Stargate shows, but it could open the doors to that technology.

The med-inject mentioned in Never Gonna Let You Go is very much like the new Insulin Injection units. There is no exposed needle. The unit is simply placed on the arm, and when pressed down, the medicine is injected into the body.

And then there's the laser gun, mentioned and used in Never Gonna Say Goodbye. While the rebels are armed with the firearms common with our ancestors, Planet Core's forces have laser guns. The rebels stand no chance. While there are no true laster weapons available to consumers, this article talks about some of the military lasers in development.

So, while science fiction authors mention all sorts of technology that has yet to be common place, there are scientists out there who are working on developing them. Like those who are trying to build The Enterprise.

New for Jessica E. Subject & a Sneak Peek at Never Gonna Say Goodbye

Hello everyone! I hope April is treating you well. :) All I'm hoping for is warm weather, and for the snow to finally be done.

In terms of writing, I have so many things going on. The release of Alien Adoration is set for May 10, so I'm getting everything ready to release this story. I'm sharing excerpts from this story every Wednesday on my blog as part of Hump Day Hook.

And I recently signed a contract for the second story in The Underground series, Never Gonna Desert You, with Decadent Publishing. Right now, I'm writing the third (and final) story in the series, Never Gonna Say Goodbye.


Here's a sneak peek at Never Gonna Say Goodbye:

Bright lights blinded Tim as he neared the main complex of The Underground. He raised his sweat covered arm in front of his eyes.

“Who’s there?”

“It’s Harris!” He expected to be stopped, glad for the security, even though the man with the light could care less about securing the complex from Planet Core spies.

“Thank, God.” Barnes lowered the light, his wife by his side. “We were beginning to think you’d deflected to the other side.”

“Never.” He blinked hard, taking a deep breath, trying to ignore the empty feeling in the pit of his stomach. “I had to play my part, submit to the leader of the rebels. He doesn’t suspect a thing.”

Barnes joined him on his trek inside, patting him on the back. “You will be rewarded for your sacrifices. Once we take down the rebellion, we’ll all wreak the benefits.”

“And I won’t have to live in this shithole anymore,” his wife said, her nose wrinkled.

He flashed her a cold smile. No, because you won’t be living at all. He had his own plan. A plan no one else knew about. The only plan that would destroy Planet Core forever.

Inspiration - Where does it come from?

When being interviewed on blogs and during book tours, one question comes up more than others, that question being, "Where do you find inspiration for your stories?"

The truth is, I find inspiration everywhere. Sometimes from a conversation with a friend, something I've overheard, a news article, something I've witnessed... And on facebook, I have a friend who shares all kinds of inspiring photos, pictures that let my imagination soar.

So, I thought I'd share a quick rundown of what inspired some of the stories I've written.

Never Gonna Let You Go - inspired by a story I wrote in my high school Science Fiction English course.

The Zurian Child - inspired by a dream, and my daughter.

The Power of Three - inspired by a conversation with a friend/critique partner.

Crash Landing - inspired by a conversation with my editor who is also a friend.

My other stories were written within certain parameters. ie. For a specific line that had guidelines. Though if you've read from any of those lines, you will know that every author interprets those guidelines differently.

A rustling in the grass woke Calla. She assumed Melina was still packing the equipment and rolled over smiling. “I needed that more than you can ever imagine.”

She gasped at the snarl she received in response, a very inhuman snarl replaced all feelings of fulfillment with fear. Opening her eyes, she found herself face to face with a large feline-like creature. There was nothing friendly in its green, glowing eyes or the curl of its lips, showing very sharp, yellowed teeth. Its putrid breath wafted across her face.

A growl came from behind her, only this time it was human. “Don’t move.” A man.

She held her breath, fear preventing her from doing anything else. A line of sticky drool splashed onto her cheek.

A shrill cry filled the air. “Calla….”

She missed the rest of the words. The feline-like creature lunged for her. Its claws dug into her bare skin. She writhed under the sharp pain. When its teeth pierced her side, she screamed before succumbing to darkness.
